Position: Curator of Art for Global Africa – Indefinite Appointment  

Salary Range: R525,058.16 per annum (Basic Salary), plus benefits  

Requirements:  

- Master’s Degree in Art History, Art Theory, Art Practice, or a related field, with specialization in historical forms of artistic production from South Africa, the African continent, or the African diaspora.  

- Experience in an art museum or gallery setting, or in university-level research/teaching.  

- A proven track record in curation, publication, and postgraduate research/teaching on South African art, African art, or art of the African diaspora.  

- Proven engagement with museum practices and scholarly approaches within the art and humanities sectors.  

- Computer literacy in MS Office 365.  

- Valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities:  

- Implementing Iziko Museums’ exhibition strategy by managing content development and project execution for both permanent and temporary exhibitions, ensuring optimal educational and societal impact.  

- Reinterpreting the permanent Historical African Art Collection and expanding it in line with the institution’s collection development strategy.  

- Conducting research to generate strategic knowledge and ensuring it aligns with key institutional outputs.  

- Communicating research findings through publications, exhibitions, popular articles, websites, and public programs such as guided tours and panel discussions.  

- Preparing fundraising proposals and ensuring compliance with relevant grant agreements.  

- Collaborating with curators, exhibition designers, and the education team to develop exhibition concepts, proposals, and budgets.  

- Contributing to the site development strategy in consultation with relevant stakeholders.  

- Advising on conservation requirements for collections in collaboration with the Collections Manager/s.  

- Actively contributing to education and public programs as required.

Competencies Required:  

- In-depth understanding of research methodology.  

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.  

- Strong report-writing and presentation skills.  

- Ability to organize and effectively communicate messages through design.  

- Knowledge of financial management and fundraising practices.  

- Strong project management skills, with the ability to plan and implement effectively.  

- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.  

- Ability to function well as part of a team.

Salary & Benefits:  

The salary stated above does not include benefits. Iziko offers generous contributions to a designated retirement fund (compulsory), a medical aid scheme (voluntary), and a housing subsidy (voluntary). Additional benefits include competitive working hours and leave entitlement.
